The former Myllykoski paper mill area owned by Redeve has undergone extensive development, resulting in significant new business activities. The agreement on the location of the new atNorth data centre in Myllykoski, Kouvola, was signed on the 4th of December 2023.
atNorth is a leading Nordic provider of data centre, high-performance computing and artificial intelligence services. It is expanding its operations in Finland and intends to build a new mega data centre in Myllykoski. The facilities will be located in an area of 21 hectares purchased from Redeve. Redeve still owns more than 50 hectares of land in the industrial park, which it continues to develop further.
In the first phase, the data centre will have a capacity of 60 megawatts and will be ready for use in the second half of 2025. When completed, FIN04’s capacity may expand to up to several hundred megawatts. The mega site campus will serve both data centre customers and customised project solutions.
“This is a major milestone in the development of the Myllykoski mill area. The investment in a mega data centre is a sustainable and responsible decision that will reduce carbon dioxide emissions in IT operations in the area far into the future. Synergy with the area’s operators will bring more benefits and opportunities for fruitful cooperation and the development of the entire region,” says Jari Lahtinen, Managing Director of Redeve Oy.
The investment will also provide heating and hot water for the city’s residents
The waste heat produced by the data centre will be used to provide heating and hot water for the residents of Kouvola. atNorth is working in close cooperation with the City of Kouvola and its energy partner KSS Energia. The new FIN04 data centre is being designed with heat recovery in mind, which will allow the excess heat generated in the data centre to be delivered to the KSS power plant and reused to serve the needs of the city’s residents.
