Kymi industrial school
The Art Nouveau building was completed in 1933 as the schoolhouse for the Kymi Vocational School and was designed by Selim A Lindqvist.
The school was built larger than would have been necessary for a vocational school, because the Kymi Company provided further education for elementary school students in Kuusankoski from 1926 to 1951. The school served as a military hospital during both wars.
Architect Lindqvist was assisted in the design of the school’s ballroom by architect Sigurd Frosterus and decorative artist Eric O.W. Ehrström. The portraits on the front wall of the hall were commissioned by the Kymi Company by Prof. Eero Järnefelt. The frescoes in the hall’s lobby were designed by Eric O.W. Ehrström. The ballroom has a 10-stop concert organ made in 1933, which was completely renovated and maintained in 2009.
The Kymi Industrial College ceased operations in 2006. Today, the building houses, among others, Kymenlaakso Steiner School, Swedish-language kindergarten, Ekholmintie kindergarten, Kuusankoski branch of the Pohjois-Kymen Musiikkiopisto and the UPM-Kymmene Kulttuurisäätiö.
